Dedrone by Axon’s intelligence report shows evolving drone tactics

Dedrone by Axon has just released its latest report, The Current & Future State of Airspace Defense, debuting at #DSEI2025. The report reveals how low-cost, fast-evolving drone threats are reshaping battlefields and national security worldwide, drawing on fresh detection data from our global sensor network. We’re showcasing these insights alongside our live counter-drone solutions on display at DSEI 2025, where we’re not only exhibiting cutting-edge technology, but also providing part of the event’s airspace security.

Drawing on comprehensive operational datasets from Dedrone’s global sensor network across Europe, the Middle East and Asia, the report reveals concerning trends in drone behavior across the region, including a 4.3x increase in DIY drone detections in 2025 as compared to 2024 and an observation that 37.5% of all 2025 detections to date occurred in low-visibility conditions.

“The drone threat is evolving faster than most defences can respond,” said Aaditya Devarakonda, CEO of Dedrone by Axon. “At DSEI, we’re not just talking about the problem; we’re demonstrating solutions that are live, operational and ready to scale. This report is both a warning and a roadmap: nations that fail to modernise will find themselves outpaced in the next era of airspace warfare.”

The report highlights critical vulnerabilities in today’s defense approaches. DJI drones still made up 83% of detections in 2025, but that’s down from 95% the year before—a notable shift. The rise of DIY builds and even RF-silent flights points to a broader mix of drone types in the skies, signaling tactical changes that could overwhelm or evade existing sensor networks.

"We're witnessing the collapse of the old air defence economics," said Ash Alexander-Cooper OBE, VP EMEA and APAC at Dedrone by Axon. "A $20,000 Shahed drone can prompt the launch of a $4 million Patriot missile. The asymmetry is unsustainable unless we fundamentally rethink how we detect, classify and defeat these threats."

As both exhibitor and an element of the airspace security provision for DSEI 2025, we’re demonstrating our field-proven capabilities with a DedroneRapidResponse trailer positioned at the venue entrance. Dedrone live detection streams across the globe will be accessible on ruggedized tablets at each of our DedroneOnTheMove solution partner vehicles including Supacat's Jackal, Thales' Bushmaster and Polaris' MRZR.

Our booth (#S9-217) will also include:

  • DedroneDefender VR Experience – Engage with realistic drone threat scenarios in an immersive environment

  • DedroneOnTheMove – Vehicle-mounted counter-drone systems for mobile protection

  • DedronePortable Tactical – Rapid deployment solutions for dynamic threats

  • DedroneTracker.AI Command & Control Station – Witness autonomous threat response capabilities in action

  • Updated Threat Wall – Latest drone threat intelligence and emerging challenges

Alexander-Cooper will offer a keynote session entitled, "Open, Connected, Intelligent: The Future of AI-Powered Airspace Defence Networks" at the Land Forum on Tuesday, 9 September at 16:00 (Session L105).

If you’re at DSEI, come see us in action. And check out the report—it’s a wake-up call for how quickly this threat landscape is changing.
