Axon's SkySwap program

Axon’s SkySwap program helps agencies transition from non-compliant drones to NDAA-compliant technology and maintain operational continuity amid regulatory changes. As security concerns grow, SkySwap provides a simple, cost-effective way to upgrade to secure, American-made drones and DFR technology.

The “why” behind this program was covered in our launch blog, SkySwap: Axon’s Bold Solution for the Future of Public Safety Drones in America, which explains how it helps agencies stay ahead of regulatory pressures.

In this post, we’ll explain how SkySwap can help your agency maintain secure, uninterrupted operations.

SkySwap program details

SkySwap allows public safety agencies to trade in non-compliant drones for credit toward new, secure, NDAA-compliant Axon Air DFR technology—keeping operations compliant and uninterrupted.

Program terms
Agencies can get started by visiting axon.com/skyswap to connect with our team. To qualify, agencies must provide documentation of FAA registration and submit a Certificate of Decommission within 90 days of their new Axon Air contract start date.

Credits received through the SkySwap program are eligible to be used towards Axon Air contracts with a five-year minimum term, and all credit received through the SkySwap program must be used by December 31, 2025.

Credit tiers
SkySwap supports agencies by providing paths to modernize their fleets through trade-in value and upgrade incentives. Your Axon representative can walk you through options based on your current drone inventory.

As mentioned, credits received through the SkySwap program are eligible to be used towards new Axon Air contracts. Let’s explore the Axon Air DFR solution and its current capabilities.

Axon Air DFR

Axon Air DFR is a fully integrated solution designed to deliver real-time situational awareness and enhance response strategies, offering key components such as:

Skydio X10
Skydio’s American-made, NDAA-compliant X10 features 360° obstacle avoidance, NightSense for low-light operations, and advanced AI for safe, autonomous navigation. Its intelligent flight system adapts to tight spaces and adverse weather, reducing pilot workload and increasing mission success.

Skydio X10 Dock
The Skydio X10 Dock enables 24/7 fully autonomous drone operations with IP54/IP56 weather protection, ADS-B integration, and 5G connectivity. Ready in 20 seconds, it supports rapid deployment in any environment, enhancing response times.

Axon Fusus
Axon Fusus integrates real-time data from drones, body-worn cameras, CAD systems, and community feeds into a single-pane-of-glass view, providing leadership with actionable insights for faster, more coordinated responses to dynamic incidents.

Axon Evidence
Axon Evidence automates secure evidence management with unlimited storage, ensuring reliable, court-admissible footage with a secure chain of custody. This streamlines investigations and minimizes administrative burdens.

Transparency Dashboard
The Transparency Dashboard allows agencies to share anonymized flight data—such as time, location, and purpose—with the public, helping to build trust while safeguarding sensitive information. It ensures accountability and supports responsible drone usage in the community.

Comprehensive training and regulatory support
Axon Air DFR offers extensive training and regulatory support, including guidance on FAA compliance, operational procedures, and ensuring smooth integration into agency workflows. This ensures agencies are fully prepared for the implementation and long-term success of the system.

FAQs

What is the current status of the proposed legislation on Chinese-manufactured drones?
The FY25 NDAA does not immediately ban DJI and Autel drones but establishes a process that could lead to their prohibition. Unless one of the authorized agencies actively determines that these drones do not pose a national security risk, they will be automatically added to the FCC’s Covered List by the end of 2025, restricting new purchases and software updates.

What does this mean for agencies?
Agencies using DJI and Autel drones face increasing regulatory uncertainty. Future restrictions on software, maintenance, and funding could impact operations, making it important to transition to NDAA-compliant alternatives.

What happens if our agency doesn’t transition to compliant drones?
Agencies that do not transition to NDAA-compliant drones may experience significant operational disruptions, including the inability to receive software updates, security patches, or hardware upgrades. As restrictions take effect, agencies could also face limitations on using federal funding for non-compliant drones, and some states may impose additional procurement bans. Transitioning now helps avoid these limitations, ensuring continued operational efficiency and compliance.

Is there a limit to how many drones we can trade in for credit?
Agencies can discuss any fleet size with their Axon representative.

Our agency currently works with another DFR vendor, can you help us make the switch to Axon Air DFR?
Yes, Axon can help transition your contract and integrate Axon Air DFR into your operations.

Our agency has a current Axon Air contract—are we still eligible for this program?
Yes, agencies with an active Axon Air contract can participate.

Can agencies donate their non-compliant drones?
Yes, agencies can donate drones according to their organizational policies.

Who do we contact with feedback on the program?
Contact your Axon sales representative or email SkySwap@axon.com.
